Sporting Events Program – Attracting Visitors As Participants, Spectators & Operators

Sporting events are invaluable in giving Hawaii worldwide media coverage and generating awareness of Hawaii as the preferred destination for high profile, quality events. HTA has created an exciting portfolio of these events, with partnerships that include the NFL Pro Bowl and the PGA Tour as well as international fishing tournaments, professional surfing competitions and world championship triathlons.

Designed to help HTA achieve its goal of growing visitor expenditures. Benefits to the State of Hawaii of this program area include:

  1. Economic impact. People coming to Hawaii to participate, attend or operate events translates to visitor spending, which helps to create and sustain jobs, and generate state and local tax revenues.
  2. Media Coverage. There's also positive media and publicity generated from national and international TV / media coverage that promotes Hawaii as a desirable sports venue and an attractive visitor destination.
  3. Enhancing Residents' Quality of Life. Sporting events provide residents with opportunities to attend or participate in additional leisure activities which add to our quality of life. In addition, each event requires the support of numerous volunteers. Being a part of this type of effort creates a sense of contribution and being part of something important. Lastly, almost every major event has a charitable component, giving back to our community.
